Annie Brownell House is located on the Historic East Side of Providence, known as College Hill, and home to both Brown University and the renowned Rhode Island School of Design. Conveniently located within safe walking distance of either institution, and less than a mile to the center of the revitalized center of downtown Providence, Annie Brownell House offers elegance, warmth, and comfort at an excellent price. The house itself is a Colonial Revival home dating back to 1899 graced by a crowning widow's walk. Guests are welcomed by the south facing elliptical entrance portico with its graceful Ionic columns and leaded glass double front doors. Once inside, guests will appreciate the extensive pilasters and moldings which give the house such solid character. The main foyer opens to a beautiful winding staircase with an elegantly carved banister that leads to the second floor bedrooms. (A guest suite is available on the ground floor). Each guestroom has been recently redecorated and includes a private bath. The furnishings are either original period pieces or tasteful reproductions consistent with the character of the house. The bedrooms, which offer a choice of twin or queen bed, have warm natural light which lend comfort to the room. Guests especially enjoy the full breakfast which is served each day in the large pleasant breakfast room that shares a back to back fireplace with the living room. Each day a different cooked entree is provided and complimented by a tempting array of fresh fruit salad, bread, muffins and hot or cold cereal, together with steaming hot coffee or one of our extensive selection of teas from around the world. An excellent breakfast to start your day! Over the past 20 years Providence has indeed enjoyed a renaissance. Since before the turn of the century, the city was bi-sected by the northeast corridor railway system and the rivers which flow through the center city were buried beneath the so called Crawford Street Bridge, which enjoyed for some time a reputation as the "widest bridge in the world" being some 150 feet long and covering 1100 of the river. The rivers have been redirected to their historic paths, the railroad has been rerouted, and the river basin which dominated the city in the 1870's has become the centerpiece of the new river walk. The moving of the railroad and rivers has spurred development and reconstruction of the exceptional architecture for which Providence is famous.
